the sycamore q+a {no.37}: Mogu Takahashi

Mogu Takahashi's work is infectiously playful and funny. I've "favorited" several items in her Etsy shop, and trying to decide on just one is like pulling teeth! Continue reading for the Q&A...

1) How did you get into art?

Actually I was studying architecture before I started making art. I don’t remember very well but when I was about 19 years old, I had an idea that perhaps I might become an artist! I soon started drawing everyday and skipping classes. At time it seemed like a stupid idea but now I feel good about my decision. Soon after I made up my mind to become an artist I began selling my work in the park, a man invited me to show my work in New York! And of course I said yes! I fell in love with art in NYC. The city was so full of excitement and inspiration. Being there really pushed me further to become a full time artist.

2) What’s inspiring you these days?

I’m inspired by everything around me especially meeting creative people or visiting their studios. Also I like the quiet time of the early morning, actually I wake up at 4am everyday! I take shower, make spicy chai, then start drawing from 4:30. Waking up early changed my life for the better. The only drawback is that I rarely get to see my DJ friends play past midnight.

3) Tell us about something you’ve made or done lately.

I just finished some illustrations for a children’s book, which will be published in October. I’m also working on another children’s book, which will be published next summer if everything goes well.

I never thought I would be working for publications, and lately I feel fortunate that I am able to get offers like these. I’m so excited to see my books sitting on bookstores shelves or in children’s bedrooms. I love making art and want to do it all the time!

4) Is there anything else we should know about you?

Well, I’ll be showing 3 handmade dolls in a group show called “Plush You!” at Schmancy Gallery in Seattle in October.

And please check my web site and my Etsy store!

Ah! I remember now, I have a photo want to show everyone. Can I put it here? This is a present from my mother on last Christmas! Look this sad face! X) It was really yummy!

Thanks Mogu!
I wish I could make it to the Plush You! show. Or any of her shows...
