our little life: Ikumi and a Weekend Well Spent
I spent an incredible weekend getting caught up with this adorable person:
Together, we...
shopped at thrift stores and the local boutiques on 3rd south in SLC,
ate at Cafe Rio,
saw White on Rice,
hung out with Ned, Nathaniel, Karl, Christina, Kirk, Kari, and the Warren clan,
hiked to Stewart Falls above the Sundance Resort,
had band practice,
went to church,
got the studio ready for a photo shoot (more info later),
found a deer carcass,
and stayed up way too late talking about anything and everything.
It was time well spent.

the sycamore q+a {no. 36}: Davis Ngarupe
This week's Q&A is with the artist behind our newest Sycamore Club print: Davis Ngarupe. Kirk and I have known Davis for a while, and got to catch up with him this summer when we were neighbors with him and his wife, Kim, at the Bijou Market in Orem, Utah. (We had a really great time, btw!) They were selling delicious cookie mixes and herbs in a can -- all with fantastic packaging. I wish they had a website selling them. They were the perfect gift items. Now Davis is in art school in LA, and he's been kind enough to answer a few questions for me:
1) How did you get into art and design?I got into art in third grade when my mom signed me up for a summer drawing class where I realized how much I liked to draw. I loved to draw basketball shoes, the Ninja Turtles and half pipes. Many years later I took a summer watercolor class that I loved because watercolors are my favorite medium to work with. At the end of the semester our class had an art show where my teacher told me I should really think about design, then she tracked down my parents and told them the same thing. That is pretty much how I got into art and design.
2) What is inspiring you lately? My friends and family inspire me the most. Two of my brothers are really good artists and I have few friends who are some of my favorite artist/designers.
3) Tell us about something you've been working on lately.I made a sketchbook a couple days ago but I don’t know if I can give up drawing in my composition books.

4) Is there anything else we should know about you?
I grew up in the Cook Islands until I was about seven when my family moved to California where I grew up some more. I like working on home and art projects with my wife. One of my favorite places in the world is Germany. I love the language, the food, the cities and villages and the people. My wife, Kimberly, and I were living in Salt Lake City but just recently moved to California so I can finish my design degree at Otis.

Thanks Davis!
I love his use of pattern....and I can't wait 'til he and Kim have a website showcasing their work.

Hand Painted Signs in Heber
Signs all over town call attention to our local elections, but Benny Mergist's are the only ones that are hand painted, which is almost enough to make me vote for him on the spot. Also - don't you love the resourcefulness of the "Pam's Bookkeeping" sign? Maybe the basketball player of the house (a teenage son?) moved out, and she decided to simply remove the hoop and replace it with her business info. The last two signs are from the local rodeo/fair grounds.
The artist Margaret Kilgallen was inspired by hand painted signs.
What inspires you?
Giveaway / New Sycamore Club Print by Davis Ngarupe

Kirk and I are finally back on schedule with the Sycamore Club Prints*. Either one or both of us had master's exams, wrote a thesis, participated in the National Stationery Show in NYC, travelled to 6 different craft shows, moved our home and business from Ohio to Utah, had family events practically every week, and packed up 3 different moving vans between May and August of this year. All while trying to keep up business as usual. Now, I know that this is nothing compared to some of your schedules, but for us, it was a lot. We finally feel like we are back to a "normal" busy schedule. For example, we are actually debuting the Sycamore Club's September print in September!
This month's artist is the talented Davis Ngarupe. I love how the intricate patterned lines of his print turned out in letterpress. (If you click on the detail shot, you can see it a lot bigger.)
To purchase or read more about Davis' Los Angeles Polizei Department limited edition letterpress print, click here. To enter the giveaway, please leave a comment below. I'll pick a winner at random next Monday, September 28th.
Also -- stay tuned for a Q&A with Davis later in the week.
* The Sycamore Club is our letterpress-print-of-the-month club. Each print is in a one time only limited edition of 100, and I hand print them on my letterpress with soy inks on 100% cotton paper. You can purchase an individual print in our shop, where you can also purchase a membership to the Sycamore Club and get a pretty new print in your mailbox every month. (Domestic shipping is free with memberships.)

the sycamore q+a {no.35}: Katherine Grandey of kg + ab

Craft Shows. Design Markets. Arts Festivals. Handmade Events. Whatever you want to call them, we've been in a lot over the past year and a half. And it seems like at the majority of them, kg + ab will be there, too. Their smooth white porcelain sculptures calmly stand out in the overwhelming sea of mixed up colors and textures of these events. Katherine Grandey, the mastermind behind kg +ab, was kind enough to answer a few little questions for me:
1) How did you get into ceramics?I studied ceramics in Undergrad and Grad School & was always making work and showing, but officially started kg + ab after my daughter was born and I quit my full time job to care for her. Ha. I thought I could raise a child and make tons of work, no problem. It’s quite a balancing act, and I don’t get a lot of sleep.
2) What is inspiring you these days?Trips out of Brooklyn to look for ceramic molds. We take small trips in search of old molds (most of my current work is cast from vintage molds from the 60s to the 80s). We scour thrift stores along the way. I love to check out new places and dig for treasure. I also love to get the heck out of the city and somewhere slower and simpler, and sometimes more beautiful. But then I always appreciate coming home.
3) What have you been working on recently?
I am working on a series of decals for diner plates. We are calling it the ”nerds” series and have four different images with a banner that says “nerds”. So why nerds? Well, to be honest from the movie “Revenge of the Nerds” - we were flipping channels one night and the movie was on, and there is a scene where the “cool” jock fraternity is playing a prank on the “nerds”, so they lit the word nerds on fire outside their house. It was this gorgeous metal sculpture and I freaked out about how beautiful it was and so not appreciated for this stupid movie and this 30 second scene. So I decided the next thing I was doing would have the word “nerds” in it. I guess I should have put this in the inspiration part, huh? But it’s kind of embarrassing to admit you are inspired by “Revenge of the Nerds”.
4) Is there anything else we should know about you?
I’m 35 and I guess, a nerd.
.................................................................................................
Thanks Katherine!
Now I know what to put in my Netflix queue :)
I also have to mention that I am completely inspired by the way she is able to continue making and selling her art after having a child. Every time I see her at a show with her little girl in tow, I think about the whole "having a family while also running a creative business" thing. I know it must be very difficult, but she gives me hope that it can be done! (It would be nice to be able to stock up on sleep ahead of time somehow, though.)
Football/Futball/Soccer
Despite having played tennis competitively as a kid, I'm not that into sports.
But slowly, over the past 5 years of our marriage, Kirk has been finding ways to worm the sport of soccer into my life. I don't know why, but this year he is finally getting through to me.
I've gone to a couple of Real Salt Lake soccer games, and actually enjoyed it without having to bring along a magazine to look at or chat up my neighbor the entire time. We've also started organizing Monday night soccer games on the elementary school field near our studio, and I'm loving it.
I draw the line at watching soccer on TV, though.
How about you? Are any of you out there soccer fans? Or fans of other sports? If so, has this been of your own accord or were you drawn in by a friend or significant other? (My friend Noelle is such a big fan of American football that she started a website for female football fans!) I'm interested to hear what you have to say. Don't worry, though, I'm not turning this into a sports blog.
