our little life: An Anniversary

I've been around long enough to know that I'm extremely lucky to have married into a wonderful, funny, loving, easy going family like the Jorgensens. Today marks exactly 6 years since Kirk and I exchanged vows and I became an official member of the clan.

The truth is, I would have married Kirk no matter what his family was like. He's that great. And more. But the fact that they're such lovely people made the deal that much sweeter. Thanks! I love you all! (But most especially you, Kirk.)

(Kirk's oldest two siblings and their families weren't around for the game of bocce when I took these photos, but they are of course included in the above sentiments.)

sycamore street press: Renegade LA & SF

We'll be driving down to California tomorrow for Renegade LA, hanging out with friends and family in SoCal for a few days, and then heading up the coast to Renegade SF the following weekend.

These shows were a lot of fun last year, and I think they'll be even better this time around. Hope to see you there!

style snapshot: Kitsch in Kindness

You are probably aware that there's a whole world out there of style blogs consisting of everyday people with the incredible creativity, consistency, and panache to post photos of their self-styled ensembles on a daily or weekly schedule. A couple that I look at from time to time are the Cherry Blossom Girl and the Style Rookie.... and as of this past month, Kitsch in Kindness.

I recently got in touch with an early childhood pal through that notorious site called Facebook. (And I mean early childhood. I think we were probably 4 years old the last time we saw each other in person!) She's a high school drama teacher, a singer, and a fashion junkie who puts together most outfits from her local LA thrift stores and second hand shops.

She'll be opening an Etsy shop soon full of clothes, patterns, and jewelry of her own creation. You can follow her blog if you'd like to be kept in the loop. I can't wait to see!

looking lovely: Outdoor Showers

There's something so refreshing and almost magical about these outdoor showers.

In high school, there was a window in my shower with a view of the nearby mountains. I loved to turn off the lights in the bathroom after dark, hop in the shower, open the window, and look out at the lights on the slopes while I lathered up. It was almost as good as an outdoor shower. But not quite.

style snapshot: 50% off at Totokaelo

There's a 50% off sale at Totokaelo right now. If I were to buy something, it'd be the above outfit. Only, I'm not a short skirt kind of person, so I'd wear the dress like a tunic with a pair of pale, worn out, rolled up jeans underneath. This outfit would even work with my basketball-shaped stomach!

Instead... I'll pay the bill for our ultrasound & tests. And although writing out a check to the hospital isn't nearly as fun as clicking "buy now" in an online shop, watching little Ingrid squirm around on the monitor was so much more exhilarating than getting a fancy new outfit!

on the road: I Love New York?

I've saved a few more photos to show you of NYC...

New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down is about how I felt by the end of our stay.

Quote of the Week

After seeing a clip from Little Women on KSL / Studio 5 yesterday, I was reminded of how much I love that movie and book. And this quote always seemed like such an unexpectedly wise thing for spoiled little Amy March to say.

sycamore street press: New Press

Thanks to everyone at KSL / Studio 5 (our local news station) for spotlighting our goods on their recent segment: The Art of the Handwritten Letter. They also featured a couple of other lovely local stationers: Sarah Jane Studios and Isabell's Umbrella. We're flattered to be in such great company!

You can see the segment online here.

And a big thank you to Babble for featuring our Alphabet and Numbers prints (designed by Stephanie Ford for our Pop collection) in a post about letterpress printed nursery posters.

sycamore street press: Our Urban Craft Uprising Booth

We had a great time at the Urban Craft Uprising in Seattle this past weekend! Can I just say that I LOVE indoor shows? No worrying about the weather and no need to dismantle and set up your booth each day of the show.

Thanks to the U.C.U. organizers for doing an amazing job, to all the lovely customers who stopped by our booth, to all our fantastic SSP contributing artists and designers, and to Amanda, Pete, & Izzy for letting us crash at their place! Now to get caught up on work in the studio...

FYI: You can see my photos of other vendors from the show over on Poppytalk.

I don't always take photos of our booths, but here are some that I found from past shows, if you're curious:

our little life: Zimbob the Dog

Zimbob is my adopted little brother.

Oh, yes. My parents have become dog people. The kind of people who let their dog sleep in their bedroom, sneak him scraps from the table, call to check on him when they're away, and try to include him in family photos... The kind who probably read Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul when I'm not looking. For those of you who knew them in the past, this will probably come as a surprise.

My parents used to be the kind of people who thought the animal clips on America's Funniest Home Videos were dumb and boring, that preparing any sort of special food for your dog was ridiculous, and that people who put photos of their dogs in Christmas cards were silly. Don't get me wrong. It's not as if they hated or even disliked dogs. In fact, we always had a dog growing up. But we lived in sunny California, my mom had her hands full with little kids, and the dogs lived outside. It was more of a pragmatic relationship.

Then their kids moved out, and they took home a beautiful little pup and named him Zimbob (In reference to Zimbabwe, where his breed originates, and also referring to small town American names like "Jim Bob".) In order to be socialized, the breeder told them to keep the puppy by their sides at all times. And just like that, the "my little pony" (as my mom likes to call him) weaseled his way into their hearts.

As much as I like to tease them about it, I actually think their attachment to him is very sweet. How could anyone resist the lovable, clumsy charms of this overgrown puppy, anyways? Did you see his eyes in the top photos? Since Kirk and I moved back in with my parents, we have definitely fallen for him. Kirk loves to take him out to play catch and horse around. He makes a great walking companion for me. And when my parents are out of town, he makes a fine studio buddy. He can sit, catch, and shake....Maybe we'll teach him to print.

Do you have pets? Is it more of a pragmatic relationship, or are they your "hairy babies" like my friend Zu likes to say?
